Crest Nicholson and RRP chosen for shipyard
Bit late noticing this one - but it's been announced that Crest Nicholson, with a masterplan by Richard Rogers Partnership, has been picked by the South East England Development Agency to regenerate Southampton's former Vospers shipyard. The masterplan includes 1500 homes and retail and leisure facilities on a site that has been used for shipbuilding for more than a century.

There's a large schism between city and sea in Southampton, the water really not present at all in the city's consciousness. All previous and current waterside developments are a frenzy of high density flats sold on their views rather than any connection with either the water or the rest of the city. As an aside, it's also currently, so I believe, got the highest national proportion (out of all dwellings) of apartments being built, something crazy like 80%. Depressingly, this is the first time anyone's tried to do it properly.
Given whay you've written about the previous development there, let's hope that the housebuilder of the year and RRP (however much of a trophy architect they may be) will do a good job of it!
